Allium, also called decorative onion or just by its Latin name, is a bulbous perennial that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family (onion family). Their tall, thin stems with spherical, pom-pom-like clusters of small, star-shaped blooms that bloom in the spring or summer are what distinguish them. There are more over 700 species in the genus, ranging from beautiful, enormous purple ornamentals to food types like onions, garlic, and chives. Depending on the species, alliums in Southeast Missouri can range in height from 10 inches to more than 5 feet. Well-liked options like "Millenium" offer small heights of 15 to 20 inches.
